The biggest mistake athletes make when taking a rest day or recovery time is:

Not setting aside time to truly rest, relax and recover.

High performance environments and living a life of sport-family-work balance is fast paced. Every athlete is training and working hard and squeezing out as much as they can possibly give.

This means recovery aspects of performance are often overlooked due to the already heavy workload - or I see athletes neglecting rest days due to feeling guilty about taking time off (which inevitably leads to burnout or injury down the line).

A great “brain hack” to have available to you is meditation or a power down visualisation, both effective ways to affect cognition.

They help you hit pause, turn off your sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight response) and turn on your parasympathetic nervous system - the rest and digest system - which is vital for physical and mental recovery.
